Abstract

Organizations’ ability to integrate diverse forms of knowledge is a key factor in generating innovation and adapting to dynamic environments. In multigenerational family businesses, the convergence of different generations fosters heterogeneous experiences, capabilities, and perspectives. However, there is still limited evidence regarding the mechanisms through which such diversity contributes to the development of innovative capabilities. The objective of this study is to analyze how the coexistence of different entrepreneurial profiles promotes knowledge integration processes and contributes to organizational innovation. This research adopted a qualitative, exploratory-descriptive approach through a multiple case study of three Mexican family-owned SMEs operating in the agribusiness, textile, and tourism sectors. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, non-participant observation, and document analysis, and were analyzed using thematic coding. The findings reveal that intergenerational interaction facilitates the integration of tacit, formal, and digital knowledge, generating organizational learning processes that foster technological, social, and business model innovation. Furthermore, knowledge transfer occurs through family interaction mechanisms, professionalization, and digitalization, enabling traditional and contemporary knowledge combination. The study concludes that the cognitive heterogeneity derived from generational coexistence constitutes a strategic resource for increasing innovative capabilities.
