Abstract

Occupational health and safety are a fundamental pillar of workers’ well-being, especially in industrial environments where exposure to physical, chemical, and biological risks is constant. In this context, the provisions issued by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have played a key role by establishing specific regulations to reduce occupational accidents and diseases. These standards cover, among other aspects, the control of exposure to asbestos, fall protection for work at height, the management of cotton dust, the implementation of machine guarding systems, and the safe handling of hazardous substances such as benzene, toluene, xylene, and lead, as well as the implementation of protocols to address bloodborne pathogens. The application of these measures has contributed to a significant reduction in the frequency of workplace accidents, occupational diseases, and fatalities. Nevertheless, evidence shows that numerous incidents persist that could be prevented through better hazard identification, risk assessment, and control. In many workplaces, critical hazards and unsafe conditions remain present, putting workers’ integrity at risk. According to official records, more than 3.3 million people suffer serious work-related injuries or illnesses every year, and millions remain exposed to toxic chemical agents whose long-term effects may result in diseases that manifest after years of continuous exposure. In this scenario, strengthening a preventive culture, reinforcing safety management systems, and promoting effective enforcement of regulations are essential to safeguard workers’ health and lives.
